Me and Jenny Holzer ...

Written as a note to a friend after attending my 55th reunion in June.

  1. And here is an interesting comment from a reader, sent to me by email since as noted who knows how to post a comment>

Dick - I didn't care for the Holzer table and benches either. I first saw it surrounded with yellow caution tape. Later, I saw a few students sitting and chatting. Finally, I walked up to it and sat down. Still, underwhelmed after a few visits. I hope students use the piece for classes... maybe non-scientists could make rubbings.

I thought her work in the enormous building at Mass MOCA in 2008 was superb... waves of words coursing, flowing over one... soft, enormous, pillowy pads to lounge on while experiencing the piece. Relax & Reflect.

My suggestion for the College's piece is to create a smartphone app for both Android and iPhone. Use something like Goggles. Take a photo of a chemical diagram and voila learn what molecule is before one. Alternatively, take a photo and see another Jenny Holzer piece, maybe video of text. Or, see something about Williams. (btw, we tried Goggles; it worked inconsistently.)
